Appointment of a Project Officer.

Sanctuary on Sea is part of a national movement of volunteers who work to create a culture of welcome and opportunities for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Brighton & Hove received its City of Sanctuary status in 2015 and has now received a grant from the local authority to appoint a Project Officer to carry out a range of high level administrative tasks which will place the organisation on a secure footing and increase its effectiveness. Some work is also required which will help extend its reach into communities.

We anticipate the successful applicant to be an experienced administrator with excellent communication and organisational skills, able to work successfully in partnership and with awareness of the circumstances and needs of refugees.

The Job Description and Person Specification is shown below. Sanctuary on Sea is seeking the completion of the tasks by the end of the contract period which is anticipated to be 150 hours of work. The Project Officer will report to the Chair, Secretary and representatives of the Management Committee of Sanctuary on Sea.

The salary level is fixed at an hourly rate of £20.00 per hour.

Job Description:

Fee: £20 per hour for a minimum of 150 hours of work (exact arrangements to be agreed with the successful candidate).

Main Purpose:

To establish improved systems and processes for SOS, placing the organisation on a secure foundation and increasing its effectiveness and reach into diverse communities including host communities.

Specific duties:

  1. Explore the requirements of Charitable status registration and options for a legal structure for Sanctuary on Sea. Prepare a (two page) report with recommendations of the way forward for consideration by the Management Committee (15 hours)
  2. Explore funding opportunities for Sanctuary on Sea and provide a short report setting out the options for consideration by the Management Committee (15 hours)
  3. In support of the Treasurer of SOS, strengthen financial systems, policies and procedures establishing new arrangements if required, including those which will enable compliance with potential funding bids, Charitable status registration or other legal structures for Sanctuary on Sea (10 hours)
  4. In consultation and with the assistance of, the Management Committee of SOS, develop a delivery work plan for the annual Strategy and monitoring arrangements (20 hours)
  5. Collate information on potential volunteers and offers of help for consideration by the SOS Management Committee and identify tasks that can be carried out by volunteers. Convene a meeting with people interested in volunteering, including those who have already expressed an interest and begin co-ordinating their assistance. (15 hours)
  6. Maintain and increase presence of SOS on social media and update the website (ongoing)
  7. Respond to enquiries received by email or social media on behalf of SOS either directly or by forwarding to appropriate committee member (ongoing) _
  8. Explore potential joint working opportunities and their benefits with the national secretariat of City of Sanctuary and make recommendations to the Management Committee of SOS (8 hours)
  9. Building on existing contacts, collate a directory of refugee and migrant community groups in the city. If appropriate, visit and build relationships with some refugee and migrant community groups and organisations to identify their needs and how Sanctuary on Sea and other services can better support them. (20 hours)
  10. Develop an up to date directory of Services which can assist refugees and migrants and which will act as a resource for them. (10 hours)
  11. Update all printed materials that are appropriate for displaying and publicising the work of Sanctuary on Sea and develop new materials if possible. (10 hours)
  12. Explore how to develop a programme of work with East Hoathly (Village of Sanctuary) and report back to the Management Committee of SOS (5 hours)
  13. Generally support the administration of Sanctuary on Sea (ongoing)

Person Specification:

  • Applications are sought from candidates who will be able to demonstrate that they have the following knowledge, skills and experience:
  • An awareness of the circumstances and needs of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants
  • Experience of working successfully in partnership and in support of others
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills and experience
  • Good IT and social media skills
  • Good report writing and presentational skills, including an ability to summarise information and draw out recommendations for consideration and action
  • Good communication including with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience of working in the charitable sector would be an advantage.
